Said Business School Announces New Skoll Scholars

Focusing mainly on middle-market firms and investors of high net worth, Maarten de Jeu holds a master of business administration from the University of Oxford Saïd Business School.

Recently, Saïd Business School announced the 2015-2016 scholars chosen by the Skoll Centre for Social Entrepreneurship. The Skoll Scholarship is given to people who have come up with new, entrepreneurial solutions to pressing social, environmental, and economic problems. Oxford invites scholars to earn their MBAs at the university so that they can further their business knowledge in order to more effectively realize their goals of social and political change.

In this 12th year of the Skoll Scholarship, the center will welcome seven scholars, its biggest cohort since the program began. Drawn from a global applicant pool, this year’s winners hail from China, Nigeria, India, Australia, and the United States.

Temple Sholom Honors Departed Member with Butterfly Garden

An accomplished investment advisor, Maarten de Jeu serves Chicago-area clients through his firm, SVM Business Advisory. When not working, Maarten de Jeu frequently takes part in community service projects, such as the Monday night meals program organized by Temple Sholom to benefit homeless individuals.

Temple Sholom features a picturesque butterfly and herb garden, called Gan Emunah (Garden of Faith), on its southeast lawn. The garden was established in memory of Faith Dremmer, who was an involved member of Temple Sholom until her untimely death at 17 years old. According to the temple’s website, Ms. Dremmer brought “justice, beauty, and goodness” into the world through her many works, including organizing high school students to serve as volunteers for the Temple’s Monday Meal program.

The garden will be used to teach children about growing food and other sustainable living practices, as well as provide fresh herbs for the Monday Meal program. The 18 stepping stones in the garden serve as symbolic tributes to Ms. Dremmer’s legacy.

An organization designed to allow experienced business leaders an opportunity to pass on their business and civic ideas to the newer generation, the Economic Club of Chicago was founded in 1927. Over the course of its more than eight decades of history, the ECC has hosted speakers from all leadership roles, including historians, labor leaders, international heads of state, and presidents of the United States. Recent speakers range from Hillary Clinton and Chris Christie to Roger Goodell and John T. Chambers.

With a diverse body of members, the organization continues to focus on the free exchange of ideas and maintains a balance of experienced and up-and-coming executives. The Monday Meal Mitzvah Program at Temple Sholom

Throughout his career as a business consultant and executive in Chicago, Maarten de Jeu has supported numerous community organizations. Maarten de Jeu has previously supported the Monday Meal Mitzvah program at Temple Sholom, one of the oldest synagogues in Chicago.

Currently in its ninth year of operation, the Monday Meal Mitzvah program at Temple Sholom serves more than 50 guests every week. Held in the dining room setting of the Lake Shore Lobby, the event is funded by generous sponsorships from Temple Sholom members. In recent years, the event has become one of the most popular volunteer activities at Temple Sholom. Volunteers plan all aspects of Monday Meal Mitzvah, from cooking and serving the meal to cleaning up afterward.

Since 2013, Maarten de Jeu has led Chicago-based SVM Business Advisory as founder and managing partner. Before launching his career in business, Maarten de Jeu received his master of business administration from Saïd Business School at the University of Oxford.

The Dean’s International Council consists of individuals spanning the globe, all of whom have emerged as leaders in the public and private sectors. Twice per year, the Dean’s International Council meets at the University of Chicago and an international destination. Meetings typically include presentations delivered by faculty members and notable guest speakers, as well as the opportunity to create innovative public policy concepts and ideas. Recently past council meetings have taken place in Doha, Qatar (2014), and London, England (2013). Other past international locations include Beijing, China (2012), and Rio De Janerio, Brazil (2005).
